Why choose SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville for Fire Damage Services?

Wet Smoke – Caused by burning plastics and synthetic materials; Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary.

How Do I Remove Odors After Smoke and Fire Damage To My Placerville Home?

2/27/2022 (Permalink)

Due to the heat, soot, and smoke of a fire, everything in your home or business will be affected. You will need the assistance of professionals like SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville who have the expertise and equipment that is needed to get your Placerville home or business back to normal as soon as possible.

You will not want to enter your home or business until all the smoke is cleared from your premises, since it will not be healthy to breathe the accompanying fumes from burned materials. Call a professional fire and smoke damage restoration company like SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville right away to ensure that your property is completely free from the after-effects of the fire as soon as possible. We can also remove those unpleasant lingering odors, and that is important for both home and business owners, too.

What Is The First Step In Managing The Unpleasant Odors That Come From Smoke Damage?

  • The first and most important step in smoke odor removal is to remove all sources of the odor. This will include removing items that have been burned, such as cabinets, furniture, drywall, and anything that is non-salvageable. The items can then be either discarded or restored, depending on their condition.
  • Our fire technicians will then clean the salvageable items with the appropriate products. We will clean inside cabinets, drawers, and closets, and wash household items, too. Carpets, furniture, and upholstery are usually cleaned off-site. All these steps should be taken right away so that the odors do not penetrate any materials deeply - this makes them much harder to get rid of later.
  • Smoke, soot, and odors from a fire will penetrate the duct system and any dust or other particles existing inside the system. Cleaning the ducts early in the odor removal process is therefore essential to prevent the HVAC system from re-contaminating areas that have been cleaned.

Give SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville a call for all your fire damage, smoke and soot damage needs. We are available 24/7 at 916-933-3890 servicing El Dorado Hills, Placerville, Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Diamond Springs, and Placerville.

12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips, Day 9 Baking Safety

12/9/2020 (Permalink)

greenery and red poinsettia borders with black text 12 days of Christmas safety tips from SERVPRO 12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips. Happy Holidays from SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville!

We all enjoy baking during the holiday season, even us at SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville! Getting together with family and friends to enjoy some traditional holiday food is something that many of us hold close to our hearts. However, the holiday season can involve many activities and distractions that can contribute to us being unfocused in the kitchen. Unfortunately, this is when accidents can occur.

It is imperative to stay alert when you are baking during the holidays! SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville is here to share some of our recommendations to prevent kitchen fires while baking!

  • Equipment Check

Equipment safety lies at the heart of all baking success. Your oven should work properly and heat to the correct temperature. It also needs to stay clean. Spills on the bottom of the oven can catch fire, so check for them and clean them before and after you bake.

  • Use a Timer

Leaving the room while you are baking leads to opportunities for fires to start and spread unchecked. If you are in the kitchen preparing several different baked goods at once, set timers to remind you to stop and check on baked goods regularly.

  • Kitchen Conscious

Keep anything that can catch fire - pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, towels or curtains - away from your stove, oven or any other appliance in the kitchen that generates heat. And do not wear loose clothing or sleeves that dangle while baking, that can catch fire too!

  • Smoke Alarm

Install a smoke alarm near your kitchen, and on each level of your home. Use the test button to check it each month. Replace all batteries at least once a year if your smoke alarm requires it.

  • Fire Safety

Always check appliances are turned off. Also, consider purchasing a fire extinguisher to keep in your kitchen and take training on the proper use of extinguishers.

The above safety tips can certainly help prevent a baking-related fire from breaking out, but that does not mean that you are always completely protected. Accidents do happen, so it is important that you contact fire remediation experts if your home has suffered from a kitchen fire. Our team at SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville want to keep our community safe during this holiday season. For more information on fire damage restoration services, contact SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville, we are available 24/7, at 916-933-3890.

12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips, Day 7 Wrapping Paper Safety

12/7/2020 (Permalink)

greenery and red poinsettia borders with black text 12 days of Christmas safety tips from SERVPRO 12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips. Happy Holidays from SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville!

For some, Christmas morning in many homes means unwrapping gifts in front of a cozy fireplace. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends not to toss that wrapping paper into the flames - it might start a serious chimney fire. It is best to throw out that holiday paper or recycle it!

We remind you three reasons why you should never burn wrapping paper.

  • Traveling embers

Paper burned in the fireplace may release small pieces which can land on a rug or carpet, setting it on fire. These smoldering fragments could even float up the chimney and out onto your roof or lawn.

  • Flame height

Flames from burning paper tend to burn higher than wood flames. They could reach combustible material in your fireplace, causing a chimney fire.

  • Toxic fumes

When ignited, paper with colored print or glitter can release harmful gases.

If a fire damage or smoke damage should affect your home or business, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville are ready to help you make it “Like it never even happened.” Our technicians are ready to help 24/7, 365 when disaster strikes. Should you ever need us for any damage restoration work, call us, 916-933-3890.

greenery and red poinsettia borders with black text 12 days of Christmas safety tips from SERVPRO If a fire from cooking causes property damage in your home, call us 916-933-3890. Happy Holidays from SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville!

Cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires and injury. There is a spike during the holidays due to the increase in cooking. Make sure that you never leave your cooking unattended and that you do not leave children unattended near a stove or oven! SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville wants to prevent home fires, so follow these tips when you are cooking!

  • Never Leave Your Cooktop Unattended

Both electric and gas stovetops can easily cause fires if you do not watch them carefully. If you do need to leave the kitchen for any reason, make sure you switch the burners off before you do so.

  • Never Store Combustible Items Near Your Cooktop

It is important that you keep surfaces near your cooktop free of clutter. Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop, mitts, utensils, food packaging, towels, etc.

  • Install Smoke Alarms

Be sure that your smoke alarms are working properly and that you have a fire extinguisher nearby. Replace all batteries at least once a year if your smoke alarm requires it.

  • Small Fire on Stovetop

If a small fire arises on the stovetop, smother the fire by sliding the lid over the pan and turn off the stovetop

  • Never Store Anything in Your Oven

For an oven fire, keep the door shut and turn off heat. Always make sure appliances are turned off.

Remember to cook with caution. No matter the size of the kitchen fire, it can be overwhelming. If you do not feel comfortable with fighting a small cooktop fire, exit the house and call 911. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville is open 24/7. If you experience a kitchen fire, we can help cleanup whether it be smoke, soot, or fire damage.

greenery and red poinsettia borders with black text 12 days of Christmas safety tips from SERVPRO 12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips. Happy Holidays from SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville!

We all agree that the holiday season is a magical time, but holiday traditions, decorations, and celebrations can lead to accidents or worse if you are not careful. Here is how to keep your family safe and healthy through to the new year.

Holiday candles cause 10 deaths, 175 injuries and over 20 million dollars of property damage each year in the United States. Here are some of our recommendations:

  • Keep candles in a votive and never set them directly on decorations or any flammable materials.
  • Never put real candles on a Christmas tree as decorations.
  • Never leave a candle burning unattended. Always extinguish candles at the end of a night or when leaving the space. It is safer to blow it out rather than risk a potential hazard.
  • Always use a sturdy candle holder to keep it from tipping over or touching flammable surfaces.
  • Be careful not to splatter wax when extinguishing a candle.
  • Get flame without the fire. Consider replacing traditional candles with flameless, battery-operated types, but do not forget to turn them off when leaving the house as LED lights do get hot!

If a fire damage or smoke damage strikes your home from an unattended candle in the following areas: Cameron Park, Shingle Springs, Diamond Springs, Placerville, and El Dorado Hills, we can help. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has the experience helping customers when disaster strikes with crews ready to respond 24/7, 365. 12 Days of Holiday Safety Tips, Day 3 Outdoor Christmas Light Safety

On the third day of Holiday fire safety, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville is here to remind you to always use proper lights for indoor or outdoor usage as indicated on their packaging to prevent fire damage to your home. Did you know that outdoor-use lights are specifically made to operate in cold and wet environments, while indoor-use lights are tested to ensure they will not cause a tree fire?

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has some tips for you to keep in mind when putting up outdoor holiday lights:

  • To hook up your outdoor lighting, use a three-prong ground extension cord with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) label
  • Connect your outdoor lighting to a Ground Fault Circuit Interrupting (GFCI) outlet. That way if there is a short or an overload on your lights, the GFCI outlet will trip before the breaker in your house. This serves as an added layer of protection against fires
  • Use properly sized plastic mounting clips or hooks. When running wires outside, always fasten your lights to a stable mounting surface. However, avoid using staples or nails. Wire insulation can be accidentally pierced or cause shorts or hard-to-find breaks. While stringing your display, keep your lights and wires well clear of electrical service lines connecting to your house, use only outdoor-rated extension cords and protect plug unions from being moved or getting wet.
  • Be safe while hanging your lights outside. Always work with someone to hold your ladder steady and keep yourself in the center. Never overreach or try to move the ladder when you are at the top

Remember that SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville specializes in fire damage restoration for both residential and commercial properties, along with smoke or water damage. We can handle any size disaster! Call us at 916-933-3890, we are available 24/7, 365 days a year!

Tips on Extinguishing a Grease Fire

11/25/2020 (Permalink)

kitchen area with brown cabinets, stove, microwave, and our equipment Be careful while cooking! In the event of a kitchen fire damage, call us, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville at 916-933-3890.

Cooking is the number one cause in home fires and injuries. Knowing how to smother a grease fire can help keep you, your family, and friends from getting hurt or having a severe house fire. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends some tips on extinguishing a grease fire!

If A Grease Fire Starts:

  1. Cover the flames with a metal lid or cookie sheet. Leave the cover on until it has cooled.
  2. Turn off the heat source.
  3. If it is small and manageable, pour baking soda or salt on it to smother the fire.
  4. As a last resort, spray the fire with a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher.
  5. Do not try to extinguish the fire with water.
  6. Do not attempt to move the pot or pan outside.

DO NOT use flour, baking powder, or other cooking powders that resemble baking soda or salt. They act differently and could make the fire worse.

If You Are Unable To Extinguish The Grease Fire:

  1. Get out! You need to leave as soon as possible to prevent injury or loss of life
  2. When you leave, close the door behind you. This will help contain the fire inside.
  3. When you get to a safe distance from the fire, call 911 right away.
  4. Do not re-enter your home until it has the “all clear” from the fire department.
  5. Call us, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville for fire damage restoration

Tips To Prevent Grease Fires:

  1. Stay in the kitchen while you are cooking. One of the leading causes of kitchen fires is unattended cooking.
  2. Do not cook if you are exhausted or inebriated.
  3. Keep anything that can catch on fire away from your stovetop.
  4. Remove as much moisture from the food, and don’t add frozen foods to hot oil.
  5. Keep an eye on the temperature of your oil. If you see smoke or smell oil that means your oil is too hot. Turn off the burner and let it cool down.
  6. Heat the oil slowly.
  7. Add food gently, so there is no splashing.
  8. Keep a lid in arms reach in case of a fire.
  9. Always keep children and pets away from the stove while cooking.

Fires can be especially devastating. In addition to the physical damage by the fire and smoke, your property may have substantial water damage from firefighting efforts. You may feel stressed and confused after such a disaster, and you will need a guide to help you through this crisis. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has the specialized equipment and expertise to help you navigate you through the process.

SERVPRO Suggests Fire Pit Safety Tips

10/8/2020 (Permalink)

Fire pit with marshmallows roasting over it Prevent and protect yourself and your families from fire damage. If in need, call 916-933-3890 SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville!

Fall season is here, and for many families in El Dorado Hills, Placerville, and Sacramento County, the addition of a homemade fire pit can dress up a drab yard with mesmerizing flames while serving as a gathering place for an afternoon barbeque or even late night s’mores! Before building a fire pit, take a moment to review some safety tips suggested by SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville to prevent potential hazards so you won’t get burned!

Backyard Fire Pit Safety Tips:

  • Consider the accessibility when choosing a fire pit size. Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area
  • Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation
  • Don’t position fire pits in hazard-prone zones with unfavorable winds. Check the wind direction before lighting a fire. Ensure that you won’t have smoke blowing into your home through open doors or windows. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, and telephone wires, 25 feet away from apartment or multi-residence buildings.
  • Don’t use flammable fluids or non-porous, water-retaining building materials to light or relight fires. Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
  • To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
  • Use a commercial fire pit screen on top to help prevent large amber from leaving the controlled area.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
  • Invest in fire safety gear. Keep a fire extinguisher, fire blanket, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.

SERVPRO Recommends A Fire Emergency Plan/Why Do You Need A Fire Emergency Plan?

10/8/2020 (Permalink)

Fire extinguisher hung on a teal wall Always have a fire safety plan! SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville is here to help with all your fire damage and fire restoration needs!

Imagine this: When there is a fire in your home, you have as little as two minutes to get out safely from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Two minutes is not a lot of time, especially when it’s the middle of the night and everyone is asleep. And when you add in smoke and heat, confusion and fear, multiple floors and several people, every second counts! When fire damage strikes, a fast response is critical. Choose us, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville. We are dedicated to responding immediately, day or night, to your home or business for any fire damage. A faster response helps to prevent secondary damage and to reduce the cost of repairs.

Here are some escape planning tips:

  • Pull everyone together and make a plan to walk through your home or business and inspect all possible exits and escape routes. Make sure to mark the location on your fire exit plan and ensure all doors and windows can be opened easily.
  • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire.
  • Install smoke alarms in every room, and on every level of your home or business. When one sounds, they all sound.
  • Teach safety techniques like staying low to the ground, and cover your face with a shirt or pillowcase to protect from the smoke
  • Choose an outside meeting place a safe distance from your home where everyone can meet after they have escaped.
  • If there are young infants or members with mobility limitations, make sure someone is assigned to assist them in an event of an emergency.
  • Conduct drills like listening to the smoke detector, and practicing the fire exit plan for evacuation.
  • Know your tools (fire alarms, escape ladders, fire doors, fire extinguisher) and inspect them

This customer had a house fire that burnt plastic. You can see the level of damage to the cabinet above.

A fire can be devastating to anyone that experiences it. At SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville we understand what devastation means and we know how to help. We have caring, dedicated, experienced technicians that are ready to assist in any situation. There are different kinds of fires that result in different kinds of soot. Different types of soot need to be cleaned in different ways. Protein fire residue is the hardest to detect, because of its light yellow or white color, but is characterized by the acrid smell of burnt food or burnt hair. Protein fire residues are some of the hardest to clean after because the smell is incredibly pervasive and strong. Combustion of plastics result in soot webs and oily soot. Plastic fire residues are difficult to clean because the soot smears if not cleaned with the correct products. There is a lot of misinformation on the internet, so make sure you call us first!

This customers' home caught fire at 2am while they were asleep. Unfortunately their home contained asbestos, but we were able to help!

Fires happen when you least expect it. There is no predicting when these catastrophic events will occur, so it is best to be prepared. The most common items people look for after a fire are important documents and photos. Many times, these items are stored together and are damaged beyond repair. SERVPRO has a document restoration center, but that only works in some instances. We recommend purchasing a fire-proof safe for your home to store your important papers and memories. Fires are devastating financially and emotionally and SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville is here to make it easier for you. We know the insurance process, so we can help you streamline it. Your time is valuable and so is your home. We want you to know that we are Here to Help!

Did you leave a pot on the stove too long?

2/1/2019 (Permalink)

Though you can't see it, this customer had a protein fire and there is soot all over. This was one of the most heavily affected homes we've ever seen.

Not all fires have charred drywall and black soot. Have you ever heard of a protein fire? Have you ever left your home and wondered if you turned the stove off? A protein fire is caused by burning food and will look and smell completely different than a normal house fire. First of all, you may not see any damage because the smoke is white or pale yellow unlike the black soot of a carbon fire. You will smell a burnt, acrid odor throughout the home. This is one of the hardest odors to remove! Treatment of a protein fire requires specialized cleaning chemicals to thoroughly clean every horizontal and vertical surface in your home. After being cleaned your home may need one or two deodorization treatments to thoroughly eradicate the odor.

Christmastime in the Foothills

12/7/2015 (Permalink)

Your tree can make or break your holiday season. Call us if you experience a fire in the El Dorado foothills this holiday season.

The cold air has finally arrived, bringing rain and snow, like we all had hoped. Now it is time to gather around the Christmas tree with our friends and family, celebrating our love for one another and our anticipation of the New Year.

While Christmas trees are absolutely a source of joy around the holidays, with their amazing smell and all of the colorful lights and ornaments, they can also wreak havoc if you are not careful. The National Fire Protection Association reports that, "National estimates of reported home structure fires derived from the U.S. Fire Administration’s National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS) and NFPA’s annual fire department experience survey show that in 2009-2013, Christmas trees were the item first ignited in an estimated average of 210 reported home structure fires per year, resulting in an annual average of seven civilian fire deaths, 19 civilian fire injuries, and $17.5 million in direct property damage."

The NFPA also reports that four out of five Christmas tree-related fires occurred in December and January, with 44% in December and 37% in January. Christmas tree fires result in high-heat fires with very "wet" smoke. If you do experience this unfortunate loss, please call our office at (916) 933-3890.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville will help you recover from your fire all the way from El Dorado Hills to Rescue, Pilot Hill, Coloma, Kyburz, Placerville, and surrounding areas. Call us if you have any questions. You will be connected with a qualified technician who can assist you with where to go next.

Don't let your Christmas season be covered in soot. We can help. Restoring your fire-damaged contents, soot-covered walls, and smoke-filled home is what we are here to do. The only thing that should be covered in soot is Santa. Let us help you with the rest. Thank you for trusting us at SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville with your home and family.
