2/16/2021 (Permalink)

Storms and flood damage happen. Our technicians are ready to go. Call us today 916-933-3890!

El Dorado and Placer County Residents Are Concerned About Preventing Flood Damage

El Dorado and Placer County homeowners know the importance of taking good care of their home – and they know that sometimes it’s worth spending a little money now, to save expense and stress later.

When riverine flooding or localized stormwater flooding hits, homes are at risk of extensive damage. Flood damage repairs can be costly and inconvenient. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends doing all you can to fortify your home against floods before anything happens, to reduce the possible harm and protect your home.

What can I do to boost my home’s flood resistance?

Here are some things to consider if you want your home to be more resistant to flooding:

  • Apply water-resistant paint to the outside of your property
  • Cover pet flaps and vents if it looks like a storm is coming
  • Use sandbags to protect your property when the weather dictates
  • Consider installing flood-proof doors and windows if you are in a high-risk area

Is there anything else I can do?

As well as taking care of your home’s structure, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends keeping on top of home maintenance projects. Things that can reduce your flood damage risk include:

  • Dealing with any roof repairs or loose tiles as soon as possible
  • Cleaning gutters and downspouts regularly and repairing any damaged parts
  • Checking your door and window seals and replacing them if needed

You might also consider hiring a landscape gardener to ensure flood water will run away from your home.

What should I do if flood damage occurs?

What Steps Are Crucial in Disinfecting Property Flooded by A Storm?

12/26/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville can help clean, disinfect, or remove materials as part of flood damage restoration.

When a storm floods your property, one of the problems you must worry about is contamination. Failure to decontaminate the affected areas can pose significant risks. It is important to note that you can clean up your property and still leave traces of contaminants.

Can contamination persist after cleaning?

Cleaning is a necessary part of flood damage restoration when an El Dorado County and Placer County property floods. However, several factors influence its effectiveness in removing contaminants, including:

  • Whether affected materials are porous or non-porous
  • Whether cleaning involves the use of disinfectants or antimicrobial products
  • Procedures used in the application of cleaning agents

What is easier to decontaminate, porous, or non-porous material?

Floodwaters contain massive levels of contaminants, such as chemicals and biohazards. In most cases, decontamination is only feasible for non-porous or semi-porous materials such as wood furniture or some floor and wall materials. Porous materials, including carpets and pad, allow deeper penetration of contaminants minimizing chances of proper decontamination. Our SERVPRO technicians remove such materials for disposal for the safety of your family.

Which steps are necessary when decontaminating hard surfaces?

  • Allowing products at least 10 minutes of dwell-time
  • Use of products at correct temperatures of at least 68°F
  • Ensuring the cleaning solution spreads evenly around the property

Our technicians use various approaches to ensure we decontaminate all areas thoroughly. For instance, to ensure we apply enough products on vast areas such as floor surfaces, we use electric machinery or sprayers for application. We also clean the surfaces we want to decontaminate before applying the disinfectant since the products need physical contact to be effective.

Restoring sanitary conditions to your property after a storm floods it is crucial. Call SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville at 916-933-3890 to assist. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

How To Handle Winter Storm Damage?

12/18/2020 (Permalink)

2 copperline pipes and black pipe behind drywall Prevent storm damages by following SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville's winter storm damage tips! If you need help, call 916-933-3890!

Disaster strikes all year round, ranging from wildfires, rain storms, to winter storms. So what do you do in preparation for these storms? As we approach the winter season, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends that you take the necessary precautions to handle winter storm damage to your home or business. Doing so will prevent additional damage to your property. Our SERVPRO Franchise Professionals have the winter storm experience, expertise, and the resources to remediate damage caused by winter weather!

Some things to keep in mind during the winter season are frozen pipes, snow and ice build-up, and attic condensation.

  • Frozen Pipes

Consider where you live! El Dorado County sees freezing temperatures, so make sure your home has frost proof faucets or weather-proofed pipes. Many of the pipes that break during winter are located outside, so remove all hoses that are attached to the faucets. Always keep your heater above 60 degrees, even when gone, as this can cause pipes to freeze and break. Consult a plumber to inspect your pipes prior to the winter season.

  • Ice Damming

A threat to your roof is snow and ice melting from the internal heat of your home or business; however, the heat is not evenly distributed across the roof, and the melting water that collects in the cold areas can freeze into ice. Ice dams can prevent melted water from running off your roof, causing it to pool, freeze and expand on the roof where it can cause further leaks and damages. Have your roof inspected regularly before the winter season by a licensed roofer.

  • Attic Condensation

When snow, ice and water build up on your roof, the warm air rising through your home can reach that cold roof deck in your attic and turn into condensation. This can lead to wood rot and mold. Make sure your attic is properly vented. Venting will allow warm air to escape the house without reverting back into a liquid. Again, consult a professional roofer for proper inspection.

Remember that heavy snow and ice can stress your roof and lead to leaks or even a sagging ceiling. Before winter begins, take these necessary precautions to prevent winter storm damage. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville can handle any kind of storm damage throughout El Dorado County, Amador County, Placer County and Sacramento County. Call our office today at 916-933-3890.

How To Keep Pipes From Freezing

12/15/2020 (Permalink)

wall torn, with a rectangle opening revealing two copper pipes frozen pipes near Placerville near me near El Dorado Hills A customer had frozen pipes in Placerville. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends keeping your pipes in check, call us at 916-933-3890

You may think that freezing temperatures are too far in the future to plan. In fact, it is just around the corner for El Dorado County and Placer County. You walk out to the front of your house with a coffee in hand only to see the snow fall and begin to pile in your driveway. This is the perfect time to plan and prepare for freezing temperatures. It is essential to prepare ahead of time to prevent the impact this winter will cause, which includes frozen pipes.

Dropping temperatures can cause catastrophic damage to your home. For example, large amounts of water can come out of a small crack from a pipe and freeze, resulting in structural damage, flooding, and potential mold growth.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends these tips to help prevent frozen pipes.

Turn up the heat

If you are going away for a few days during the winter, it’s recommended by many insurance companies to keep the heat at a steady 55 degrees. This will keep your home just warm enough to keep the pipes from freezing.

Open your doors

As the temperature drops, it’s a great idea to keep the cabinet doors open in your home to allow the heat from the rest of your home to warm up the pipes.

Faucet Drip

When pipes freeze it’s the pressure that is formed between the blockage and the faucet that will cause the pipe to rupture. Letting the faucet drip, preferably with warm water, avoids the pressure from building inside.

Insulate, Insulate, Insulate!

Usually, pipes are located where there isn’t much insulation, like attics and basements. You can use fiberglass sleeves or foam to dramatically reduce the chances of your pipes freezing.

During colder weather, frozen pipes are the most common cause of property damage. We receive calls every winter in elevated cities about frozen pipes in Placerville, winter storm damage in Cameron Park, attic mold in Coloma, winter roof damage in Diamond Springs, and water damage in Shingle Springs. If you encounter any kind of storm damage loss, call SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville at 916-933-3890 for immediate response. The longer you wait, the greater the chance of secondary damage. We have the training and knowledge to mitigate the destructive effects that water damage can cause!

Autumn Storms

11/23/2020 (Permalink)

Autumn storms are right around the corner. The effect of these storms can be good or bad. As much as we love the sound of thunder, the jolt of lightning going through the sky and the smell of rain, there are bad things that can come along with it. Power outages are often a risk associated with storms. It is good to know what to do in case you lose power, because you never know how long it could be out. It could be out for a matter of seconds, or for several hours. Here are some tips SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville suggests that will help you know how to be prepared, and what to do during a power outage.

  • Keep flashlights available around your house. Avoid using candles when possible.
  • Keep the opening of freezers and refrigerators to a minimum. When kept closed, refrigerators can stay cool up to 4 hours, and freezers can stay frozen up to 48 hours. If need be, you can put ice in a cooler to keep your food cold.
  • Watch out for carbon monoxide poisoning. If you are running a generator, it should be used outside and away from a window or door. Never use a gas stovetop, oven, camp stove, or charcoal grill to heat your home.
  • If it’s cold in your home, add more layers of clothes and blankets. Do not use the oven or a grill as a heating source. If it becomes too cold, try to plan to go to another location where heat is available.
  • Turn off and disconnect any appliances and electronics. The power may surge or spike when it is restored, and that may cause damage to the items.
  • If you have a sump pump, keep an eye on it so you don’t end up with a flooded basement.

If a storm occurs, the safety of you and your family is of the utmost importance. Be safe out there!

5 Things To Remember As A Storm Approaches

water heater in closet space Always be prepared for storms with a backup generator! Keep your power running for usage of water heaters, air conditioning, or other appliances.

With the storm season swiftly approaching El Dorado and Placer County, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has been emphasizing the importance of emergency storm preparedness. As leading storm damage restoration experts, we are familiar with the risks posed by storms, including the best ways to prepare for them.

Here Are 5 Benefits of Having a Backup Generator During a Storm

You Don’t Get Stuck In The Dark

You won’t have to rely on flashlights or candles to go about your business at home. By getting a backup generator that automatically activates during power failures, it will ensure that your home stays well-lit.

Remaining Comfortable

It can be devastating if the temperatures are extreme and you don’t have adequate power to use heating or air conditioning. By investing in a generator, it will allow you to stay warmer during the winter months, or cooler during the summer months until regular power is restored.

Food Won’t Spoil

Refrigerated food can spoil easily if the power outage lasts more than a few days. With a backup generator, you won’t have to rely on dry goods, and your food will last longer!

Maintain Communications

We at SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommend that it is vital to have radio contact, or even better, internet and television access too, to stay apprised of weather updates and to reach out for help in the case of an emergency.

Control Flooding

Consider getting a backup generator to help prevent your basement from flooding in the event of a storm flood. Even during a power outage, you will be able to connect your sump pump to drain water. This will save you a lot on emergency water damage repair costs.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville hopes you will turn to us in the event of your emergency storm damage for restoration services. It is difficult to predict when a storm will happen and the damage it will cause to your home and/or business. Storms can impact you to varying degrees which is why SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville recommends you take the approach of advanced preparation to remain as safe as possible in the event of a storm, whether it be wind storm, firestorm, thunderstorms, or snow storms! By taking the extra steps to protect your property, you can be certain that no matter what type of storm moves through your area, you are as protected as possible.

So what can you do to be as protected as possible from the storms?

Prepare your home in advance as much as possible.

While the nature of storm damage can be erratic, by doing some advanced preparation work to protect your property, you can ensure that you are taking the right steps to mitigate any possible damages. For instance, start by trimming back any dead or overhanging trees, as well as securing any objects that could possibly become loose during a wind storm. Even consider installing a home generator for utility usage if your power is out!

Create a family communications plan.

It is important to have a communications plan so you can check in with your family and be certain that everyone is accounted for and safe. Oftentimes, a storm may catch one or more of your family members while they are out and about, set a designated meeting point to regroup after the storm. In other cases, when your family is all at home when severe weather is forecasted through the area, you can move as a group to your designated sheltering area until the storm has passed.

Make sure your emergency kit is stocked.

Always have an emergency kit prepared and fully stocked in your home. The emergency kit can contain everything your family may need, both during the storm and after the fact. Items we recommend are flashlights, batteries, first-aid supplies, non-perishable food and water are all good to keep on-hand just in case.

Consider getting a weather radio.

In our present day, having cell phones has made it so much easier to receive emergency weather alerts no matter where you are, but in case of severe weather or the battery runs low, it is always good to have a backup such as a weather radio. Storms can be unpredictable and cause power outages, or even knock out cell towers, so having a weather radio that is either powered by replaceable batteries or a manual system is smart.

If your home is damaged by a storm, you can depend on us to take care of any damages. Contact us at SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville at any hour 916-933-3890 to report damage and receive a rapid response!

Storm Flooding

3/30/2020 (Permalink)

Fallen drywall from a ceiling This commercial property in Placerville suffered flooding from a rain event. The water came in the main level, which then flooded the basement below.

Storm damage is very unique, and every situation needs a different strategy. Here in El Dorado County, we see a lot of snow and rain storms accompanied by flash flooding. Cameron Park and Placerville are most commonly affected by moderate flash flooding. Though most people don’t think of it as a “storm”, SERVPRO considers wildfires to be a storm event as well.

In water storms, SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville will take your phone call and dispatch a team to your home or business. The team will evaluate your needs and give you an on-site estimate. Once you have approved the estimate and authorized us to perform the work, our experienced crew will extract all of the standing water. Depending on the recommendations and agreed scope of work, we will either begin removing all of the wet materials, or place drying equipment. Our equipment is usually in place for 3 to 5 days, depending on the materials affected and the severity of the damage. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has the most up-to-date training to provide you with a smooth and efficient restoration process. At completion of our services, our technicians will thoroughly decontaminate all of the affected areas, if applicable.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville responds completely differently to fire event storms. In wildfire situations, a large number of calls for emergency service come in before the areas are even accessible. When you call our office at 916-933-3890, a staff member will obtain information about your home or business. We will also ask you questions about access and condition of the structure. Our goal is to have a crew on site at your location to conduct an evaluation within 4 hours of your call.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville can weather any kind of storm, any time of day.

Fire Damage Rancho Cordova

3/18/2019 (Permalink)

This customer had a fire that burned plastic. Plastics make oily soot and will streak and stain if not cleaned appropriately.

California wildfires make an appearance every year. Big or small, we all feel the impact. Smoke and soot are particulate matter that is on the surface of your items and your home. The best way to get rid of smoke odor is to physically remove the particulate matter from the surface of the material, whether with dry wiping or wet washing. Never re-paint without cleaning first! Different types of soot require different cleaning methods, so make sure you give us a call before doing any cleaning yourself. After physical removal of the particulate matter, we will nano-deodorize the home using hydroxyl or ozone treatment. SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville has the experience to make it "Like it never even happened." From Sacramento and Rancho Cordova to El Dorado Hills and Placerville, we are your trusted resource for any house fire, wildfire, or business fire!

Winter is approaching

10/26/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville would like to remind everyone that the upcoming winter season will be a very wet one indeed! With the rain we had last year, we expect to get about just as much this year! That being said, our franchise would like you all to take precautions necessary to have a safe and joyful winter!

1. Double-paned windows - remove the screens and install storm windows to ensure that the heat stays in and the cold stays out. If that doesn't work for your budget, try picking up an inexpensive plastic-film sheet kit from your local hardware store. This should help keep your home nice and warm!

2. Remember to protect your pipes from freezing this winter! The most susceptible pipes in your home will be located in attics, crawl spaces, basements, and near outer walls. You can try adding more insulation to them to keep them from freezing.

3. Make sure tree and bush branches are away from your home. With the rain and possible snow coming our way, the branches can be so weighed down that they'll break and fall onto your roof.

SERVPRO of El Dorado Hills/Placerville would like to remind our community of the rain that will hit this winter. We are predicted to have yet another very wet winter, so that means we all need to be prepared for what is about to come...
